A Pagan Landscape

Misty cursed land rolls down to our sea The ghost of industry towers over all And the body of truth runs underground When the centre of the world ran through this southern land Tin and laughter gathered easily bringing people together Before even then, people were buried here Their loved ones lie with the soil and the night A view of the ocean, a view of the sky Rumbling by When the tin has gone the artists will come A new canvas is born from the moor and the sun Then people will stumble over what was once new Stare out to beyond and depart again and again and again and again and again and again The Pagan landscape will live forever

about

"The music throughout the album is at times wonderfully esoteric, such as the waves of sound on 'Song For Tomorrow' and the solid, verging towards traditional essences on 'Stepping From Sollars' (but don't be fooled, while traditional elements are in the rhythm patterns, the music is not traditional).

One of the stand-out tracks on the album is 'The Ancients', which has so many elements, from vocalisation to beautiful overlaid sax to thematic rises and trailing off of the background. The other is 'The Myjer', with its Eastern-infused vocals and echoing sax lines.

'The Water Drinker' is an orderly musical journey through beautiful, well-shaped lyrical episodes and is very refreshing, while 'Trelleward to Pendeen' is reflective, a journey in reverse, and altogether quite beautiful with outstanding saxophone lines. Interestingly, the track is longer than the journey from Pendeen to Trelleward on the earlier track, and it feels as if the music takes a more explorative pathway.

A glorious follow-up to the previous album and one which sees Davies' true colours, delivering the promise of a musician with many journeys made and many still to make – and he will take his listeners along for the ride."
Sammy Stein

This album was started earlier this year but really was born after a visit to deepest Cornwall in the UK. Where I stayed was where a number of abandoned tin mines had been left leaving me with a ghostly impression. Together with this the landscape and light has inspired a thriving art scene (see Barbara Hepworth, Kurt Jackson or Walter Langley) which also inspired me to finish this album.

On this landscape I am joined by a number of very talented friends and musicians. So thank you to Dasha Larks and to Dave Morgan, Rin Megginson, Gary Fairchild, Bill Keller, Andrew Eagle and Carol Escoffie of EJI (We Need a Name). Thanks also to Rick Stuart and Sammy Stein for your amazing support and of course to Rachael who came up with the title of the album which in turn created the direction of this project.
